ACT pacing and test-day strategies

Enhanced ACT (2025+). English 50 Q / 35 min. Math 45 Q / 50 min, four choices. Reading 36 Q / 40 min. Science (optional) 40 Q / 40 min. Short break after Math.

Spend your minutes where the points are cheap. Most students do not miss ACT questions because the questions are hard. They miss them because minute 33 of a 35-minute section is a bad place to meet a question they would normally get right.

1.Know the clocks cold

Enhanced ACT (2025+). English 50 Q / 35 min. Math 45 Q / 50 min, four choices. Reading 36 Q / 40 min. Science (optional) 40 Q / 40 min. Short break after Math.

If test day is the first time you feel those clocks, that is a disadvantage you chose.

2.Look at the clock once, at halfway

English: two essays done by 14 min. Math: Q23 done by 20 min. Reading: passage two done by 20 min. Science: three of six passages by 20 min — if the argument passage is still ahead, three is on pace.

Behind at halfway? Speed up now, not with four minutes left. Ahead? Slow down and stop making careless errors.

3.Twenty seconds, then flag it and move

If you cannot see how to start a question in 20 seconds, flag it, answer it (bubble or click a guess), and move on. The score counts how many you got right. It does not care which ones.

A hard question and an easy question are worth the same point, so spend your minutes where the points are cheap. Answer every question — bubble or click.

4.The last 60 seconds: stop working, fill

There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so every blank is a free point you gave away. Pick one letter and fill every remaining question with it — bubble or click.

Blind-guessing a handful of blanks at four choices is a raw point or two, often 0–1 scaled. Do it so nothing is blank. Then, on your next practice, fix the pacing so you do not need to.

5.The night before, and the break

One light block at most, then stop. Lay out your ID, admission ticket, pencils, and snacks. Watch = silent, no alarm, not a smartwatch. Phone OFF, not silent — a ring voids the test. Eat a real breakfast in the morning.

Short break after Math. Eat something. Don't check your phone. Don't talk about the test.

Practice it on the clock
